Expert Choice Going for Gold with Selection Process of the 2016 Olympics

Using its collaborative decision-making software, Expert Choice invites public to help determine which city should host the 2016 Summer Games

Washington, DC (August 19, 2008) – Washington, DC (August 19, 2008) – Expert Choice, Inc., a leader in collaborative, decision-making software, today announced the launch of its 2016 Olympics venue decision model - "Olympic Decision." Following the Beijing Olympics, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has the important task of choosing the host city for the 2016 Summer Olympics (2012 has already been awarded to London). Expert Choice has taken the four finalists: Madrid, Rio de Janeiro, Tokyo, and Chicago, and plugged them into its Comparion™ software to demonstrate how the IOC decision process can improve when politics and emotions are removed from the decision process.

The challenge with the existing selection process is the inability to accurately measure and weigh each selection member’s choices. To address this, Expert Choice breaks the decision into two stages. Evaluators (or judges) first rank the key criteria, generating a relative importance scale. Then they rate the cities based on each criteria. The results show both the winning city, as well as clear justification for the choices made. This approach, while a significant departure from the existing process of voting on a single city and eliminating the lowest vote-getter, is easy to implement and more efficient.

A robust Web-based prioritization and collaboration application, Comparion helps organizations of all sizes deliver transparent team decision-making, tight strategic alignment, and easy-to-communicate outcomes, resulting in critical organizational buy-in and improved execution. Using this model, Expert Choice developed “Olympic Decision” around five key objectives: Olympic principals, diversity, infrastructure, athletic excellence and future economic benefits. Using these key objectives, participants will be asked a series of pairwise one-to-one comparisons to determine the most appropriate host city based on both qualitative and quantitative aspects.

“By aligning decisions with objectives, creating buy-in among stakeholders, and providing a structured decision making approach, you create an environment where unbiased decision-making can occur,” said Rich Dougherty, CEO of Expert Choice. “Comparion has helped thousands of users confidently make the important decisions that drive their organizations forward, and through this fun and educational exercise we look forward to demonstrating how these same principals can be applied to the IOC’s daunting task of selecting host cities for the Olympic Games.”
