Read the Abstract: Risk Misconceptions and Clarifications presented to at the MORS meeting of the National Security Risk Analysis Community of Practice on June 21st 2016.
Misconceptions about risk abound, and hinder effective decision making, risk analysis and risk management–impeding communications and organizational understanding of risk. Dr. Forman reviewed 3 major areas where better clarification of risk terms and process can dramatically improve risk analyses. Risk analysis can be improved by better understanding of:
- differences and relationships between risk informed decision making and risk analysis/management
- conflicting definitions of risk within organizations and professional associations
- process barriers to risk understanding and communication.
Dr. Forman also demonstrated a solution to these issues by showing how seven basic risk terms (linked back to commonly used variations) can be used to accurately assess risk.
